Are You New to Swegways? Try Our Tips to Help Make the Most of the Experience

Swegways are brilliant fun, but in the early days, you can expect a lot of “trial and error”, and all of the associated bruising! Initially, it can be difficult to get the hand of these machines, but given time, you can become the next Tony Hawk of swegwaying…maybe.

Today, we have created this article to help you to make the most of your Swegway experience. We have collected anecdotes and tips from seasoned Swegway riders, or at least as seasoned as you can be on a technology that’s only been around 16 years.

Tip 1: Strengthen Your Core Muscles

Being good on a Swegway requires that you have excellent core strength. We would definitely recommend that you spend some time exercising and concentrating on these muscle groups.

Yoga is an excellent sport (does it count as a sport?) to this end. It will help strengthen your core muscles, but it will also improve your balance too.

Tip 2: Improve Your Balance

As well as yoga, there are other things that you can do to help improve your balance, and believe us when we say that good balance is probably the most important quality that you can have when you ride a Swegway.

Aside from yoga, there are other things that you can do to improve balance, some of which may seem a little silly!

  1. Stand on one leg with your eyes closed and try to maintain your balance. It’s much harder with eyes closed and it will reveal any weaknesses. For instance, if you lean to the left, you know that you need to do more to compensate balance on your right – your right side is slightly weaker.
  2. Practice balance on a wobble board.
  3. Do squats

Tip 3: Practice Tilting Forward and Moving Side-to-Side

Swegways move forward as you tilt forward. Initially, this will feel extremely unnerving. We aren’t used to moving in this way and it can be difficult to “let go” and tilt forward. By practicing on a flat surface, you can prepare your body for moving in a manner that is relatively unnatural for us.

You also need to practice tilting from side-to-side, as this is the way in which we control the direction of the Swegway.

Tip 4: When First Starting Out, Practice on Grass

When you first take your Swegway out, you should practice on a nice soft surface, like grass.

With the classic Swegway, this might be harder, because they tend to be for on-road, rather than off-road use and, as such, do not have the same ability to cope with grassy terrain.

Don’t worry too much, though. All you need to do is buy special off-road tyres and swap them over. Alternatively, choose grass a surface that is relatively free from wet mud and damp.

Tip 5: Wear Wrist Protectors

When you first start out on your classic Swegway, it’s highly likely that you will fall off at least once. Now, many people are reluctant to wear the safety gear, but we nonetheless recommend that you wear a helmet and knee protectors.

However, if you want to forgo this, do, but you must at least wear wrist protectors. If you fall, you fall from relatively high (your full height plus a few inches). This can definitely lead to broken wrists, so make sure that they’re supported and protected – you can always wear a long sleeved t-shirt if you want to hide them!

Key Features to Look out for When Buying a Hoverboard

Hoverboards are the much-vaunted gadget of 2017. They are a lot of fun and they definitely turn heads. However, it’s important that you make the correct choices when buying your hoverboard, because they are not all built to the same specification. In order to get the best out of your hoverboard, you should consider the following six features.

Load Bearing Weight
The first thing to realise, is that like most single-person vehicles (e.g. skateboards, bicycles, etc.), hoverboards are categorised according to size and weight. You need to match your board to your physical bearing. For example, if you are an adult, you will need a larger board than a child would need.

Off Road or On
The next distinction that you should be on the lookout for is the type of terrain where the board will perform the best. There are three categories here:

1.    Off road – these have large tyres that have a good degree of suspension, making it easier to travel over uneven terrain.

2.    On road – these have narrower, harder, tyres and are great for building up speed on flat surfaces, such as concrete. You will need to be careful when buying your hoverboard, because you are not allowed to ride them on the public roads.

3.    All terrain – these combine elements of both of the above and perform reasonable well on both uneven and even terrain.

The Quality
As we mentioned in the introduction, there are many different types of hoverboard available. One way to distinguish them is in terms of quality. Generally, the Swegway brand is the best choice. you should expect to be paying at least £400 for a decent board. If you see a hoverboard for sale at less than £200, then we would advise against buying it, as the quality is usually poor.

The Battery
Batteries can be a little hit and miss when it comes to hoverboards. You should look for a board that has battery that will last for at least 12 miles. There’s nothing worse than going out on your board and having to walk miles back home. Samsung batteries tend to be the most respected within this industry.

Added Extras
Many hoverboards come with added extras. Some of these extras, such as Bluetooth capacity, come with the board. Bluetooth allows you to do a number of things, including listening to music as you ride. Other accessories come in the form of attachments. For example, you can buy a Kart attachment that transforms the board into a sit-down kart. These are great fun.

If you want a board that is compatible with a particular attachment, be sure to research this before you buy the board.

The Warranty
Finally, you should expect to be given at least 3-months warranty with your board. They are generally very robust, but that doesn’t mean that they never encounter problems. Having the warranty in place will help you to protect your purchase.
